Two sets down, then magic: 19-year-old Fonseca becomes first teen to beat Djokovic at a major
On Court Philippe-Chatrier, 19-year-old Brazilian João Fonseca stared down 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic — and roared back from two sets down to win 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in a near five-hour epic.
With it, Fonseca became the first teenager in the Open Era to beat Djokovic at a Grand Slam. His heavy topspin forehand and the electric Chatrier night turned the match into the most-shared moment of the 2026 season so far — and a Chatrier highlight for Brazilian tennis not seen since the "Guga" Kuerten era.
Stacked on top of top seed Sinner's round-two collapse, the upset produced an astonishing sight: a men's Round of 16 without a single former Grand Slam champion for the first time in the Open Era. A brand-new major winner was now guaranteed.

"It's one of the most special nights of my life. To beat my idol on Chatrier at Roland Garros — I still can't believe it."
— João Fonseca, after beating Djokovic in the Roland Garros 2026 third round

Top seed Sinner collapses; World No. 1 out before round three
Reigning World No. 1 Jannik Sinner led by two sets and served for the match, only for Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerúndolo to author a stunning comeback, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1. It marked the first time in the Open Era that a sitting World No. 1 failed to reach the Roland Garros third round, blowing the top half of the draw wide open.
Defending champion Gauff falls in round three
Defending champion and No. 4 seed Coco Gauff was upset in the women's third round. No. 3 seed Iga Świątek also bowed out in the Round of 16 to Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, reshuffling the bottom half of the women's draw and clearing a path for a new generation.
Qualifier Chwalinska is the talk of Paris
Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska (ranked around No. 114) opened with a 6-4, 6-0 demolition of Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, then kept rolling. The qualifier who fought through three rounds just to reach the main draw was writing her own Roland Garros fairytale — one of the stories of the fortnight.
"The uncrowned R16": a Roland Garros first
With Sinner and Djokovic both gone, the 2026 men's Round of 16 featured no former Grand Slam champion for the first time in the Open Era. A wave of next-gen names and dark horses — Fonseca, Mensik, Cobolli, Cerúndolo — took over, and a first-time major winner was assured.
